Baja 500 - Toughest in Decades

Baja 500 Sandmaster BuggieStarting a few hundred yards from the resort on the majestic Baja California peninsula, this year’s tight and technical course proved to be the most challenging Baja 500 in decades.  The world’s second oldest off road race attracted a record 438 entries and more than 150,000 spectators.

The riders and drivers began thundering off into the countryside at 6 a.m. on Saturday (June 3). First the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed by the car and truck classes two hours later at approximately 9 a.m. Vehicles started in 30-second intervals in the elapsed-time race, with an 18-hour time limit to become official finishers.

Baja 500 HummerThe 2006 Baja 500 was filled with competitors from 28 U.S. States, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, France, Japan and New Zealand, all preparing to challenge the very technical and rugged 424.29-mile course.  Attracting such notable names as Parnelli Jones, Ivan “Iron man” Stewart, and the Unser family throughout it illustrious past, this year’s race welcomed NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Robby Gordon as the defending Baja 500 champion.  Gordon flew in from Dover, Delaware late Friday night to climb into his factory prepared Hummer H2 race truck early Saturday morning.  Unfortunately for Team Gordon, they fell victim to the rugged terrain preventing them from a repeat victory.  Gordon was then flown by helicopter from the Baja desert to an awaiting private jet to get back to Dover, Delaware the next morning for a NASCAR Nextel Cup event. Brian Collins & Larry Ragland [vehicle No. 12] in their Chevy Silverado took the 2006 Baja 500 race win.

Baja 500 Sandmaster BuggiePre-race festivities for the 38th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 were held in Ensenada on Friday (June 2). Drawing approximately 50,000 spectators, the pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and display of every race vehicle was held near the Costa Baja, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday (June 2).  The Baja events are a must see, the next race is the grandest of them all, the Baja 1000 on November 17, 2006.
